This One Time At Band Camp...
My friend Alana reminded me of this funny quote from American Pie and I had to use it. How is this relevant to anything I have to say, well my girl went to her very first, week long, overnight band camp. Sure summer camps are what parents sign their kids up to do for the summer, but our summers have always been about doing a whole lot of whatever we want with no schedule attached to that summer. Band camp for us was more of a commitment to our school program and I am hoping it turns into something that she will totally enjoy and want to do again. So we spent last week packing and making sure she had everything she needed and I am still concerned she will not have enough food to put in her belly.
As a parent it was a little overwhelming to experience the sea of kids that flooded the dormitory to check it with my girl. I was wondering how they were going to keep track of all of them...I stopped my worrying with that because I didn't have time to worry about much else when she was faced with her tryouts. She waited in line for 3 hours and her ability to stay calm went out the window quickly with each passing minute. I have to say I never went to band camp and her dad never went to camp so as far as advice we were totally winging it. I have been to choir camp before but I don't remember having to sing for anyone by myself unless I just wanted to. I didn't need to experience tryouts to know that yes this was a scary thing.
We left her yesterday about 4:15 and I have heard from her 3 times. I am sure as the week goes by that I might be lucky to get one phone call. We miss her already and it is so funny how quiet the house is without her here. Her brother will be lost this week, he fusses when she goes and babysits during the day so this will be interesting to see how this goes. So I sit here wondering what she is doing and waiting for her to call and I know this is the beginning of the next stage in her life. So here we go...

ReplyDeleteWhat a lucky girl! Band camp is so, so much fun. I begged my parents every year to let me go, and eventually they relented...my senior year in high school!
ReplyDeleteHow did her tryouts go?
She did fine just had problems with sight reading. They haven't really got into that yet. She did make 2nd chair in the 5th band.
ReplyDeleteAtta girl!!
ReplyDeleteSight reading's hard.
